Good Blood Sugar Control

The never ending challenge of diabetes is keeping your blood sugar in "good control".  So many things have an impact on blood sugar. It is also constantly changing throughout the day. The "up and down" pattern can be very frustrating.
Everyone's blood sugar fluctuates during the day. The pattern is normal.  The best or most effective time to test blood sugar is before meals and 2 hours after.

Ideal Blood sugar ranges:
Before meals and bed:  80-110 mg/dl
2 hours after a meals:  Less than 140 mg/dl

I generally suggest "before meal" readings to be at 100. It is a simple number to remember and 100 is a beautiful number for blood sugar. The two hour reading shows if your blood sugar comes back down after eating. We know blood sugar increases when we eat. It just needs to come back down by the 2 hour mark. Don't bother testing at 1 hour. It will always be high.
